Salmon back in deeper water (Sep-24-2013)

Rough water and high winds limited the fishing last week and changed the water temperature again. Early last week we fished in front the piers and caught a few salmon and yesterday, (Monday) we moved back out to 100 foot of water and caught lake trout and 3 and 2 year old salmon.

150 foot of copper and 300 foot of copper with nitro stingray spoons produced some salmon and some hits in the deeper water; however the best method was dipsy divers at 150 foot with the live wire Pro Troll with the Rapture Illusion fly. The lake trout continued to come on metal Gold Star flashers and Spin n Glos and the Pro Troll white blade blue wiggle flasher and the Rapture Oceana fly.

There are still a few salmon in front of the piers; however you can probably catch as many in 100 foot and get a variety of species and age classes. Salmon back in front the piers (Sep-16-2013)

This week produced good fishing back in front the piers with 8 to 15 fish per trip. After the water warmed up a week ago, north and northeast winds dropped the water temperature back into the high 40’s and the salmon moved into the river water again. The salmon, this weekend appeared to be a little smaller than last week with most running from 12 to 17 pounds and a few of the 8 pound 3 year old early running males showing up in the catch.

Ace Hi plugs (any glow or silver/green and silver/red) run on flat lines, 2 and 3 color lead core, 30 foot copper, down riggers and dipsy divers produced very well. We also took some salmon on the dipsy diver with silver/mountain dew Pro Troll and Rapture last supper flies. The Nitro glow Area 51 Stingray also produced about 4 salmon and multiple hits on a 2 color lead core.

How long this run will last is unknown, however as long as the water stays cold there should be some salmon staging in front for the run up the river. Even with warm water, there still are salmon, steelhead and lake trout out in the deeper water—you just have to do some searching. Fished moved in front the piers (Sep-08-2013)

Cool water brought some very good fishing in front the piers with creel numbers up to 20 fish. This fishing was very good Monday through Wednesday and then as the water started to warm, the creel limits dropped to 6 to 10 fish per trip. Today, after seeing the water temperature was in the upper 60 we ran off shore and fished in 90 to 110 foot of water and caught 16 fish two of which were undersize lake trout and had to be returned. The catch today consisted of salmon from 4 to 17 pounds and lake trout up to 14 pounds.

In front the piers we pulled Ace Hi plugs on 2 and 3 color lead core, 30 foot copper and the downriggers run at 5 and 7 foot down. Any glow Ace Hi plug worked early in the morning and as the morning progressed we switched over to Ace Hi plugs that were more silver or combination of silver green or red plugs. Divers were run with white/mountain dew and glow frog Pro Troll flashers and Rapture green hypnotist flies.

Once we returned to the deeper water today we fished with the same combinations I listed in last weeks report.

Multiple 20 pound plus salmon in the creels (Sep-02-2013)

The catches this week continue to be some of the heaviest boxes of fish this season and include 20+ pound kings in every catch (with the largest being 25+ pounds). We fished in 90 to 110 FOW, however there are some nice salmon being caught in 60 FOW, however the water is still warm and the success here can be very spotty. Creel numbers ranged form 12 to 22 fish per trip and consisted of Chinook salmon, Coho salmon, Steelhead and Lake Trout.

Best baits were pearl black dot and green ladder back Ace HI plugs on the high coppers. On the deeper coppers we caught fish on the live wire and white double glow Protroll 8” flashers with wild fern flies and magic man and orange stingers. The Divers produced fish daily with white mtn. dew, live wire, white glow and blue wiggle Protrolls with Rapture Illusion and blue hypnotist flies. Lake trout were biting on chrome and trash can Goldstar dodgers pulled on the bottom with green and white glow spin and glows.

20 + pound Chinook in Saugatuck (Aug-25-2013)

This week we started fishing steelhead, coho, and kings in 180-230 FOW, and ended fishing kings and lake trout in 80-100 FOW. The catches at the end of the week were some of the heaviest boxes of fish this season and include 20+ pound kings in every catch. Best baits were pearl black dot and chrome Ace HI plugs on the high coppers. On the deeper coppers we caught fish on the live wire and white double glow Protroll 8” flashers with wild fern flies. The Diver produced fish daily with white mtn. dew, live wire, white glow and blue wiggle Protrolls. Lake trout were biting on chrome and trash can Goldstar dodgers pulled on the bottom with green spin and glows.
